Guatemala
Guatemala is filled with rich native cultures, archaeological treasures, and exquisite natural beauty. These along with its complex political historyand economic and social challenges make it one of the most fascinating countries in Central America.
When you first step foot in Guatemala, your head will spin with the bright colors and intricate patterns of handcrafted textiles, pottery, and masks, with the heavy scents of incense and local delicacies, and with the ringing of dozens of languages including Spanish and Kaqchikel. Approximately half of the country’s population is indigenous and the various Mayan cultures have been preserved for centuries.
Dig a little deeper and you will learn about the many challenges facing the country. Serious social and economic development problems stemming from the 36 year civil war that ended in 1996 greatly affect the people today, especially the rural indigenous population. Although some improvements have been made to public services and infrastructure many more are needed. Insufficient health services, high rates of illiteracy and school drop-out, poor urban planning and a lack of clean water are contributing factors stunting the country’s development.
Guatemala’s kind people, beautiful cultures, and stunning landscapes, contrasted with it’s multifaceted developmental challenges ensure that it will capture your heart and leave you wanting more.
